Author Dennis Chriszt, CPPS, provides practical guidance on the practice of mystagogy in contemporary parishes, the wisdom of the early church mystagogues, and today’s church documents to help Christian initiation coordinators and catechists understand the goals of mystagogy and plan for postbaptismal catechesis in their communities.

One of the most delightful and helpful aspects of this book is the author’s familiarity with and pastoral wisdom about the renewed catechumenal process. From his own parish experience and insights gained through giving workshops and analysis of the process as implemented in three parishes, Fr. Chriszt summarizes and highlights their real-life practices then offers practical suggestions to parish ministers for a better mystagogical experience.

Beginning in the first chapter’s reflection on the whole of the Christian Initiation process, especially the role of the mystagogy, his clarification of the mystagogical process of awareness, reflection, dialogue, insight and intentional continuing conversion are truly valuable.

He outlines the need for and steps for developing a solid and enlightening mystagogical process beginning with the very first rites of the catechumenal process.

This book is a well-articulated workshop in print: it belongs in the hands –and hearts -- of every parish minister and volunteer in faith formation ministry.

—Clare Colella, Director of Adult Initiation and Adult Faith Formation, Our Lady of the Assumption Parish , Master Catechist, Diocese of San Bernardino, California

For far too many years we have heard the protest: mystagogy is the least effective period in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The reason for this might be a complete misunderstanding of the profound meaning behind the Church’s vision for an effective mystagogy, which is rooted in an overall understanding of an effective initiation process within the context, of what Dennis Chriszt refers to as “mystagogical communities” (11).

In six motivating chapters, Chriszt uncovers the forgotten ancient wisdom of mystagogy and inspires readers to understand it in its fullest sense. Chriszt skillfully combines the Church’s vision for initiation ministry with actual practice, something that in my experience is considered invaluable.

Creating an Effective Mystagogy reminds us that the goal of Christian initiation is living the Christian life. And, in the end, mystagogy cannot be reduced to the last period in the initiation process. All of the steps and periods of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults invite catechumens, candidates, and the entire parish into a new way of living—a way of being in the world that is reflective of the mystery of Jesus Christ. And, most importantly, summons us to ask, what difference does this make?

—Donna Eschenauer, Associate Academic Dean and Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology, St. Joseph's Seminary and College, Yonkers, New York
