Statement of John Thomas, Director
Liturgy Training Publications
September 2008
As a result of recent media reports, Liturgy Training Publications has received inquires about Fr. Kenneth J. Martin’s relationship with LTP.
I hired Fr. Martin in 2002 to consult on and edit liturgical texts. He had been recommended to me as an internationally recognized expert is his field. Fr. Martin never maintained an office at LTP. He worked from his family home on the east coast.
From time to time, Fr. Martin traveled to Chicago to meet with me and others to report on his work. He also traveled with me to attend publishing events on LTP’s behalf. Fr. Martin’s service to LTP concluded recently and he is no longer employed by LTP.
Fr. Martin never was granted faculties to minister as a priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Liturgy Training Publications Offers
New (to LTP) Faith Formation Resource
Chicago, Ill., Nov. 17, 2006 — Liturgy Training Publications (LTP) is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of the liturgy-based, whole-community faith formation resource, CELEBRATING THE LECTIONARY (CTL). LTP is known for its liturgy resources and annuals such as Sourcebook for Sundays and Seasons, At Home with the Word and Workbook for Lectors and Gospel Readers. John A.Thomas, Director, explained the acquisition this way:
“Celebrating the Lectionary is a great fit for LTP. Acquiring CTL builds on our mission to ‘encourage faith formation and growth in the spiritual life, especially in the preparation and celebration of the Sacred Liturgy.’ It supports the growing collaboration between liturgical and catechetical ministries. We want to thank Resource Publications for investing 17 years developing this comprehensive array of resources. We are grateful to publisher William Burns and the outstanding CTL writers and editors for all the work that has gone into the refinement of this project, and we hope now to bring it to an even broader audience.”Celebrating the Lectionary is a collection of resources fitting a variety of uses in the parish. The most widely used component is Children’s Liturgy of the Word, a liturgical packet providing a scripture reflection appropriate to children ages 5–11 for each week of the year. Another popular title, which addresses the growing need for Spanish-language resources, is The Word to Go/La Palabra Para Llevar for families. Youth and adult packets include bilingual (Spanish/English) prayers and discussion questions. The whole community focus of the program is reflected in the scope of the resources, including developmental age-level packets for ages 3 through adult. Three packets (Spirit Alive for youth, Justice & Mercy for adults, and Christian Initiation for children) contain materials for the catechumenate process including weekly dismissal questions, the optional Year A readings, reflections on the rites, and a family sharing sheet. All materials include sessions for use year-round. Resource Publications publisher, William Burns, had this to say about the transition:
“We are pleased that Liturgy Training Publications sees the value in Celebrating the Lectionary. We feel confident that the local directors and catechists who rely on CTL won’t experience even a blip in the continuous customer service they are accustomed to receiving. LTP will accommodate the needs of the CTL user base in a timely and efficient manner and provide a fine platform for spreading the word about this time-tested yet cutting-edge approach to forming disciples.”
Many of the CTL staff will continue to produce the program, assuring a smooth transition. Editor Janet Miller, editorial assistant Katie Meister, production manager Elizabeth Asborno, and copy editor Laura Quilling will continue to work on the project. In addition, former marketing manager at Resource Publications, Kathleen Truman, will join LTP as Celebrating the Lectionary Parish Ministry Consultant. Truman brings with her over 20 years of experience in catechetical, evangelization, liturgical, and family life ministries in the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon. Truman had this comment:
“The acquisition of Celebrating the Lectionary by LTP brings new vigor and momentum to the project. I look forward to providing consultation and training for parishes and diocesan offices around the country. Because I came to the Catholic faith as an adult, and through my ministry experience, I have seen first hand the power of liturgy to transform lives. CTL is a powerful resource for forming lifelong disciples who find their strength at the Eucharistic table and take seriously the words of dismissal at Mass, ‘go in peace to love and serve the Lord.’”
During a brief time of transition through the end of the year, orders and inquiries related to Celebrating the Lectionary should continue to go to Resource Publications, 160 E. Virginia St., #290, San Jose, CA 95112-5876, 888-273-7782 or 408-286-8505.
