Why do Lectionary-based catechesis?

The Celebrating the Lectionary™ series is different from other catechetical resources because it takes the Sunday Lectionary--the readings that we hear each week at Sunday Mass--as its basis. Through the course of the liturgy and cycle of Lectionary readings, we hear the story of the Paschal Mystery--the Passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ--which is at the heart of our faith. The three cycles of Sunday readings, as those who have attended Mass regularly for a number of years can attest, do not become repetitive or boring over time. Rather, their rich words continue to reveal new meanings to us as we grow and change on our journey to God.

Liturgy is inherently appealing to young people, who learn from stories and thrive by ritual. Unfortunately, many young people are not adequately formed in the liturgy of our Church, and their lack of understanding causes the liturgy to lose some of its majesty and meaning for them. The proclamation of the Word becomes boring when they have received no background to help them understand it. The changing colors and symbols of the liturgical year pass unnoticed when they have not been taught to anticipate them. As a result, Mass attendance becomes less of a priority for each passing generation.

For this reason, it is very important that we form our young people not just in the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, but in the richness of the Lectionary and liturgical year. When children are formed in the liturgy and Sunday scripture, the Mass ceases to be boring and becomes full of significance. Their ears and eyes perk up as they hear words and music and see gestures and colors that have meaning for them.  They learn how to apply the liturgy to their daily lives and are filled with the energy to go forth to serve God and one another, testifying to the meaning of the Word in their lives.

In just 10 - 15 minutes a week, Celebrating the Lectionary™ can bring formation in the Sunday Lectionary and liturgical year into your program. This year, plan to set aside a few minutes at the beginning or end of your regular faith formation or school religion class in order to bring this vital formation to the young people with whom you work.

The History of CTL

The Celebrating the Lectionary™ series has its roots in the ingenuity of a few dedicated volunteers at a small, rural church in British Columbia. They wanted to provide catechesis to their community but lacked staff and funding. So, together with Christian churches of other denominations in their area, they developed a simple but profound system of catechesis rooted in the Lectionary, the same source that the early Church used to catechize her members. The resources that they created provided in-depth catechesis without requiring trained staff or much expense, and soon grew into the Celebrating the Lectionary™ faith formation series. Over 20 years later, Liturgy Training Publications continues to hone the simple system developed by this small faith community, focusing on providing parishes with engaging, doctrinally sound Lectionary-based catechetical materials that are inexpensive and easy to use.
