The Baumhart Years: Selected Talks and Writings of Raymond Baumhart, SJ, 1970-1993
Raymond Baumhart, SJ

Rev. Raymond Baumhart,SJ, was the twenty-first President of Loyola University Chicago. He had the longest tenure of any Loyola president, serving from 1970 to 1993. During those years he spoke and wrote to many groups inside and outside of the university. The topics he addressed varied from the presidency to governmental relations, from research to being a Jesuit.

His 29 years of education, including Jesuit requirements in the classics, philosophy and theology, and a doctorate in business administration from Harvard, helped to prepare him for the presidency. So did his teaching management in Loyola's School of Business, and being Dean of that School, acting Vice-President of Loyola's Medical Center, and Executive Vice-President.

During his tenure, Loyola University was the largest Catholic university in the United States. It had ten schools on four campuses (one in Rome). On those campuses, faculty taught more than 15,000 students annually, and provided health care to more than 400 patients daily.

This collection of Father Baumhart's talks and writings contains the best of his thinking about the mission, the faculty, staff, and students of Loyola. Contributing to the talks were his experiences as a U.S. Navy officer, his doctoral research in business ethics, and his six decades as a Jesuit.
