New words . . . deeper meaning, same Mass. You may have heard that there will be some changes to what we hear and say at Mass. Mass will remain the same, but some of the words will be different. This pamphlet part of the Revised Roman Missal: Understanding the Revised Mass Texts series (formerly known as What’s New About the Mass series) provides a brief but deep explanation of how and why the texts are changing. The revisions to the Mass texts, the prayers and responses that we use during the Mass, will give deeper meaning to the celebration and this pamphlet series will help us understand these revisions so that we will know how to respond at Mass. The primary focus of the series is to introduce the changes and provide details and context regarding them so that all are prepared for the implementation of the revised Mass texts. The texts from the revised Order of Mass included in this resource received recognitio (final approval) from the Holy See on June 23, 2008. Recently we have learned that the Holy See has made several changes to these texts previously considered final. Therefore, some of the texts in this resource will be slightly different from what will be published in the final Roman Missal. However, the explanations of how and why the prayers and responses of the Mass are changing and the theological reflections included in this resource are current and will serve your pastoral needs for catechesis and formation.
