Wine and Bread
Photina Rech, OSB

Sister Photina Rech is a mystagogue for our times. With passion and great learning, she unfolds for us the mystery we celebrate. She delights in exploring what cannot be explained, in raising up the worlds of scripture and myth, of the early Church and of the contemporary world. If you think you know all about wine and bread, take and read!

This wonderful work makes a profound impact on liturgical spirituality. Sister Photina Rech was a cloistered Benedictine nun with a deep understanding of the symbols of Christian life and worship. This book is an English translation of a small portion of her monumental (1200-page) accomplishment, Key to the Cosmos: A Symbolism of Creation–her contribution to liturgical scholarship. In this first volume of her work in English, we find her examining the Bible and early Christian writers in great detail to highlight what they teach us about the Eucharistic elements–the bread, which is “the work of human hands,” and the wine, the “fruit of the vine”–which become the Body and Blood of the Lord in the Eucharist. The metaphor and imagery she uses echo the patristic texts of the early Church.

Paperback, 7 x 10, 118 pages.
