Prayers for Difficult Times

It is relatively easy for Christians to communicate with God during the good times, when everything is going well. We rejoice and bless the Lord, so generous and splendid. But the majority of our days are obscured by so many problems, both personal and familial. "Personal": apathy, reluctance, disillusionment, bitterness, lack of self-acceptance, resentment, frustration. . . "Of those around us": spouse, children, neighbors, coworkers and bosses–treachery, defamation. . . So many problems and situations that are trying to bring us down!

For the believer, prayer then becomes a cry of anguish and desperation, with traces of trust. The Lord understands us and always lends a hand, even when we don't feel it, even when we don't believe it. The outcry of the poor and needy is a constant prayer and venting before the Father, in whom, finally, we trust. Our God is always the only refuge that will never fail us–in one way or another: maybe even down paths and ways unknown and unwanted by us.

This prayer bouquet may help in these horizonless occasions. What is important, in the end, is that we say these prayers with a measure of faith. Just like the disciples, who were terrified as the storm was sinking them into the deep waters of the Tiber: "Save us, Oh Lord, because we are dying!"
